M&D is engaged in several European and national projects related to Earth System science.

The main emphasis is on supporting the Earth System modelling community as well as on services for data access, and processing and visualization.

Earth System modelling is supported through the development and maintenance of a modelling infrastructure that comprises source code management, compilation, execution, and monitoring of numerical Earth System models.

M&D organizes workshops for users of the infrastructure and provides  documentation as well as direct support for model developers if required.

Services with respect to climate data are the maintenance of the CERA data base which hosts the World Data Centre for Climate, and support for the import and export of data.

The international community, represented by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), has decided to regularly report on the state of the art of research related to climate change issues. M&D supports this effort through direct participation in the execution of IPCC (and other) numerical simulations, and through the collection and distribution of data resulting from these experiments.
